TeacMem Dissemination Conference held in Hamburg

From Monday, November 19th to Wednesday, November 22nd, 2012, the concluding Conference of the TeacMem project was held in Hamburg.

The project involved researchers, teacher-trainers, teachers and students from Denmark, Norway and Germany, focusing on Memory Culture related to World War II in the three participating countries from different perspectives and elaborating concepts and methods for addressing this subject(s) in teacher training and school history teaching,

Conference Programme.

On this event, the project presented both its proceedings and results to multiplicators and interested public. Invited were teacher trainers and researchers as well as students from all three countries, as well as guests from related fields of research and education, among the latter, Joke van der Leeuw-Roord, director of EUROCLIO (the European history teacher association), Cecilie Felicia Stokholm Banke from The Danish Institute of International Studies (DIIS) and Prof. Dr. Kristin Skinstad van der Kooij from Oslo and Akershus University College’s Master’s Program in Multicultural and International Education (Faculty of Education and International Studies), who gave leactures and comments on the project and it’s place in the scope of memory culture and history teaching.

The conference started at Hamburg University’s Library with the presentation of the forthcoming book “Teaching Historical Memories in an Intercultural Perspective” (edited by Helle Bjerg, Andreas Körber, Claudia Lenz and Oliver von Wrochem), which combines articles on the experiences the project’s members made in their three international and interprofessional encounter seminars in Hamburg-Neuengamme (Germany, 2010), Copenhagen (Denmark, 2010) and Oslo (Norway, 2012) with presentations of the concepts and methods for teaching and teacher training developed within the project and materials on selected subjects — such as dealing with perpetrators and the White Buses rescue-operation — which help to address specific questions related to learning memory culture.

The first evening also saw an overview presentation of a video documentary on the project’s three seminars, making available more of the “look and feel” but also the dynamics of discussion processes. The video material will also be the basis of educational video material.

It was followed by a key note address on the contect of the project’s work by Cecilie Stokholm Banke on “memory Culture as a Subject of History Didactics”.

The second day offered participants the opportunity to both get to know the Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial, but foremost was dedicated to presenting (even testing) and discussing activities and methods developed in the project. Apart from a presentation on the theoretical background based on the concept of competence-oriented history learning and teaching based on the model of “FUER Geschichtsbewusstsein” (Andreas Körber) methods both for encounter and project didactics, e.g. such for actualizing and addressing prior concepts and attitudes (Helle Bjerg and Katrine Vinther Scheibel), for methodically de- and re-constructing memorials and memorial narratives (Claudia Lenz and Anne Talsnes. This aspect was also addressed by the presentation of a teaching programme on the different memorials in the Norwegian village Talavag and Bergen (accompanied by an instructive series of photos of these memorials) presented by Jenny Heggvik and May Britt Wiel Haugland. Other examples of activities was focusing on intra-classroom activities (Harald Syse) as well as on specific thematic aspects (Oliver von Wrochem, Ulrike Jensen).

The third day was dedicated to reflection and evaluation, which was delivered by some students from the three countries who had been integrated to parts of the project and especially two of the invited guests, namely Joke van der Leeuw-Roord and Kristin Skinstad van der Kooij, addressing specifically the aspects of the value of the project’s conceptual background and value from the perspective of history teaching and from intercultural education.

Both commentators acknowledged the project’s contribution to an important field of development of history teaching and promoting international and intercultural understanding with Europe, but also suggested broadening of its conceptual and methodical work to other historical topics within Europe and on a larger scale.

International Dissemination Conference of the Comenius Project TeacMem (Nov 19 – Nov 21, 2012)

Learning Memory Culture. Concepts and Methods for Historical Learning in Memorials and Museums – International Dissemination Conference of the Comenius Project TeacMem (Nov 19 – Nov 21, 2012)

How can we approach historical remembrance? This question lies at the heart of the three-year, EU-funded project TeacMem, which involves partners from Denmark, Germany and Norway. The participants (teaching educators, historians, teachers, memorial educators, disseminators and students) have studied the memory cultures regarding the Nazi era and World War II in the three countries. Together, they have developed and tested a range of educational methods for transferring knowledge about this subject in memorials and schools.

The concluding conference will feature the presentation of a publication and film. Participants will also talk about the methods they have developed during the project, which will be demonstrated in workshops.

The conference will take place in the Lichthof building of the Hamburg University Library and in the Centre for Historical Studies of the Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial.

The language of the conference will be English.

More information please find here Conference Programme_Oct 24, 2012_extern or write an Email to Ulrike Pastoor (ulrike.pastoor@uni-hamburg.de)

CFP: The Future of Holocaust Studies – Southampton and Winchester 07/13

From: Hannah Holtschneider <thefutureofholocauststudies@gmail.com>
Date: 16.07.2012
Subject: CFP: The Future of Holocaust Studies – Southampton and
Winchester 07/13
————————————————————————

The Universities of Southampton, Winchester, Edinburgh and Chester
29.07.2013-31.07.2013, Southampton and Winchester, University of
Southampton and University of Winchester
Deadline: 16.11.2012

As we approach the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the camps in
2014 and 2015, the era of the living witnesses to the events of the
Holocaust is drawing to a close. This conference will explore current
and future trends in Holocaust studies, assessing the discipline after
70 years of historical research and its popular dissemination, and 70
years of cultural production, Holocaust education and musealisation.
What is the current relationship between the Holocaust in history,
memory and culture? How is this being informed and problematised by
other genocides, past and present? What will be the future of Holocaust
studies?

This major international conference is organised in conjunction with
Holocaust Studies: A Journal of Culture and History, the Universities of
Southampton, Winchester, Edinburgh, Chester and London (the Institute of
Education’s Centre for Holocaust Education), the Holocaust Educational
Trust and the Higher Education Academy. We invite contributions that
address the production, exhibition, and reception of all forms of
Holocaust representation, from history writing through museums, films
and television to classical and popular music, internet and videogames,
literature, fine and performing arts. Moreover, the conference aims to
debate and discuss these issues as challenges that we all face as
educators and researchers, and to encourage engagement with these
provocative questions through exchange between academics and
practitioners, scholars and teachers, being aware that the questions,
challenges and roles listed here often also coincide. Are the demands of
the classroom reflected in the questions posed by researchers – and vice
versa? How and to what extent can recent cultural approaches to the
Holocaust be used by educators? What are their strengths and limitations
as teaching tools?

This will be a residential conference over three days. There will be
some funding available for bursaries for postgraduates and other
scholars whose home institutions cannot meet conference costs.

We welcome individual paper and panel proposals which address the future
of Holocaust studies in any relevant discipline. We envisage focusing
particularly on the areas of historiography, museums and public history
and, broadly defined, culture.

Individual proposals of no more than 300 words, and brief biographies of
no more than 100 words, should be sent to:
futureofholocauststudies@gmail.com by 16 November 2012.

Organising Committee:
Dr James Jordan (University of Southampton)
Professor Tom Lawson (University of Winchester)
Dr Emiliano Perra (University of Winchester)
Dr Hannah Holtschneider (University of Edinburgh)
Dr Tim Grady (University of Chester)
Kay Andrews (Centre for Holocaust Education, University of London)
Peter D’Sena (Higher Education Academy)
Alex Maws (Holocaust Education Trust)
