From September 20th to 24th, an international Conference on “Structures and Processes of Commemorating Cruelties in Academe and History Teaching: The Commemoration of the Transatlantic Slave Trade and of the National Socialist Crimes in Comparison” was held at Hamburg University, in cooperation with the Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial and the Academy of Mission at Hamburg University.
In this Conference, forms of memory culture related to the National Socialist Crimes in Germany and Europe on the one hand and on the Transatlantic Slave Trade in Ghana on the other hand were presented with an additional focus on how to remember the Transatlantic Slave Trade and German and esp. Hamburg involvement in it in Hamburg.
Speakers and moderators at this Conference came from the University of Education in Winneba as well as the University of Ghana in Legon (Ghana) and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi (Ghana), Hamburg University and European University “Viadrina” at Frankfurt/Oder but also from EUROCLIO, the European History teachers’ Association based in the Netherlands.
Within this conference, Dr. Claudia Lenz of the European Wergeland Centre (Oslo/Norway), partner in the TeacMem project, presented results of the TeacMem project under the title of “Competence oriented historical learning as intercultural learning – experiences from the TeacMem project”
